It’s that time of year again when the Super Bowl captivates the world. Over one hundred million football fans will tune in to watch the two best teams and biggest players in the sport. This massive event has also produced some truly memorable moments throughout its history.
Fans will hope to witness a Super Bowl for the ages. Tickets in hand, merchandise worn, loved ones’ favorite treats being cooked up, podcasts listened to, and Super Bowl odds assessed, the anticipation is palpable all over America. This year’s final game certainly has some special moments to live up to, though, with the Super Bowl creating iconic memories for fans. We aren’t just talking about amazing plays here or fiery confrontations — we’re talking about highly unusual situations.
So, while this year’s Super Bowl is currently hogging the limelight, let’s recall a few of the greatest shows on Earth’s unforgettable moments.
The Super Bowl Shuffle
In the lead-up to Super Bowl XX, the Chicago Bears supplemented their impressive on-field performances with a music track that raised $300,000 for charity. The eventual winners of the Super Bowl that year managed to sell 500,000 copies and earn a Grammy nomination for their “The Super Bowl Shuffle” track, with it being one of the first-ever examples of music and sport crossing over. While it hasn’t always been well received when professional athletes branch out into the music world, the Chicago Bears definitely managed to nail this particular attempt.
The Virtual Coin Toss
Although modern audiences are used to remotely attending major sporting events in today’s world, in 1985 it wasn’t really the norm. It happened at Super Bowl XIX in 1985, though, as US President Ronald Reagan’s second landslide victory and the subsequent inauguration date clashed with the Super Bowl meeting between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. Reagan was desperate to attend, though, and did so via a satellite link where he carried out the pre-game coin toss from the White House. It was a strange scenario, but it worked. Sort of.
Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction
Of course, while the sporting action is the main attraction of any Super Bowl event, the halftime shows also add to the overall spectacle. In 2004, that certainly was the case, as global superstar Janet Jackson took to the stage at Super Bowl XXXVIII alongside Justin Timberlake. It didn’t exactly go to plan, though, as Timberlake ripped off Jackson’s clothing as part of the act, only to then accidentally expose her breast to the global audience watching on. It resulted in complaints, big fines, plenty of damning headlines, and even time delays for live events in the future to avoid something similar happening again.
The blackout in 2013
A power outage can potentially ruin any major event, and that’s exactly what occurred at Super Bowl XLVII. The highly anticipated game between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers still delivered, but fans and players alike were worried if it would all go ahead when the Mercedes-Benz Superdome experienced darkness for 34 minutes. Now known as the “Blackout Bowl,” the show did indeed still go on, with a memorable encounter eventually seeing the Ravens come out on top. Despite the game’s undoubted quality, it’s a Super Bowl occasion that will always be remembered for the blackout that nobody expected, especially as NFL officials and organizers faced plenty of scrutiny afterward.
