The Cubs swept the White Sox in the Crosstown Classic Series this past weekend, but that wasn’t the biggest headline. The Cubs may have a new superstar on their hands, and he might just make a run at the Most Valuable Player award this year as well.
Pete Crow-Armstrong has taken the major leagues by storm in 2025, and he is showing no signs of slowing down. He started the year as a great glove with a bat that needed work, but now he’s figured that part out while being arguably the best defender in the entire sport.
As of the conclusion of the White Sox series, PCA currently leads the Cubs in average, home runs, stolen bases, slugging percentage, OPS, hits, doubles, and runs scored. He also leads the team and the entire National League in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and is the only National League player with a WAR of 3.0 or higher.
At this current pace, Crow-Armstrong is slated to finish the year with 41 home runs, 48 stolen bases, 131 runs batted in, and 124 runs scored. These numbers from a player in his first full year of MLB action are almost unheard of.
That doesn’t even get into how impactful his glove has been in the field for the Cubs’ defense. He has been so fantastic on defense that he makes some of the more difficult plays look routine.
Against the Mets, he hawked down a fly ball hit by Juan Soto that had a 35% catch probability, but overran the ball and had to reach behind himself to make the catch. Coming into the majors, his glove was easily his greatest strength, and it has only gotten better with time.
Most Valuable Player is not an award given out lightly, so we should take a look around the league to see what his competition is looking like. Other notable names include Pete Alonso, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Corbin Carroll.
PCA leads that group in stolen bases, runs batted in, and WAR. At best, his bat may be third among the four players, but his defense is far and away the best. He is third in the majors with 8 outs above average, with the next closest of the four players being Tatis with 5.
That all being said, Pete Crow-Armstrong is far from the perfect player. He walks only 4.9% of the time, which is well below the league average. He started the year off quite slow as well, which could arguably make his current stats look more impressive.
He may not win MVP or even be in the conversation for the award a month from now, but one thing is for certain. Pete Henry Crow-Armstrong is one of the most electric baseball players in the world.
