Cubs’ superstar Kyle Tucker has been having a good year as a whole. He has been what the Cubs had hoped to be when they traded for him back in December. Despite his superstar status, he had been in a rough slump for nearly a month.
Before the series against Miami, Tucker was having a rough time at the plate. He was visibly frustrated after countless at-bats where the result was less than desired.
Dating back to April 26th, Tucker had been hitting just .190 until May 18th. The Cubs would then head on the road for a 6-game road trip starting with a 3-game series in Miami to face the Marlins.
However, the Miami series was different.
In game 1 of the series, he ended 0-4 with a walk. Don’t let that stat line fool you; those four at-bats without a hit were actually very productive outs.
Tucker’s average exit velocity on each of those balls he put in play was 104.9 MPH. The major league average exit velocity is 89 MPH. The first game of this series was rather unlucky for Tucker. If anything, it instilled some reassurance that the hits would eventually come.
In the final two games of the series, Tucker hit 3-4 in each of the two games with two home runs and a walk. Just with those two games, he brought up his season batting average from .260 to .278.
Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. Tucker has a great chance to continue putting the ball in play with success in Cincinnati when the Cubs visit the Reds for their first series of the season. Tucker has hit well against the NL Central and also the Reds so far in his career, sporting a .364 average in his three matchups with them.
